Cable Tray Fill Calculator

Plan how much of a tray cross-section a set of round cables occupies. For conduit, use the conduit fill calculator.

Tray area: 36.00 in²

Cable area: 1.57 in²

Fill: 4.4%

Within the comparison limit you entered.

What this does not do

It does not apply NEC or IEC tray fill tables, ampacity, or bending radius. Measure the usable loading depth your tray actually allows, then check the standard for the job.

Questions

How is cable tray fill calculated here?
Usable area is width times loading depth. Each cable group adds quantity times the circle area of its overall OD. Fill percent is cable area divided by tray area.
Is 50% a code limit?
No. 50% is only the editable comparison default. Tray rules depend on cable type, voltage and the standard you are building to. This page does not certify an installation.
